在德國的求和之下 
第一次世界大戰結束


為紀念在一戰當中犧牲與受難的軍人與平民 
1919年11月7日 英王喬治五世宣布每年的11月11日為國殤紀念日（Remembrance Day）
也在這一天發起 Two Minute Slience 行動的宣告


在這一天人們會配帶著紅色的虞美人花
原因來自於加拿大軍醫John McCrae的一首詩《在法蘭德斯戰場》（In Flanders Fields )


In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.


We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders fields.


Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.


法蘭德斯是一戰中戰況最慘烈的戰場
也是虞美人花盛開的地方
虞美人鮮紅色的花瓣便代表著壕溝中的鮮血


所以這天也被稱為虞美人日（Poppy Day）
